Le Tallec told Sunderlands official website:

"I chose to come to Sunderland because I need to play games,"

Sunderland have completed the signing of defender Alan Stubbs on a free transfer

Stubbs has penned a one year deal with the Black Cats, with an option of a further year at the Stadium of Light.

Stubbs told the club's official website:

"I've been impressed with everything about the club,"

"The training ground is brilliant and I've played at the Stadium of Light before, it's a fantastic venue.

"I'm very happy to have signed for Sunderland and am looking forward to the season and the challenge ahead.

Sunderland have joined bitter rivals Newcastle United in the race to sign Australian defender Craig Moore

Free agent Moore has been in disscussions with Newcastle over a contract, but as yet no agreement has been reached.

Sunderland are now reported to be ready to step in and offer the player a 2 or 3 year contract he is after.

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd said:

"We are still negotiating with the player and his agent."

"He has indicated that he wants to come to Newcastle, but we have to get a deal that suits both parties."

Sunderland midfielder Matt Piper has turned down a move to Eveton to play for Sunderland next season for free.

Sunderland winger Matt Piper has signed a new contract to keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2008. As part of the deal, the player, whose mother originates from the town, has shown generosity and loyalty rarely shown by a top level footballer by offerring to play the next season for free, to repay Sunderland and manager Mick McCarthy for the loyalty shown to him during his injury rehabilitation.

Despite his injuries, Piper has demonstrated top form when available, an attracted the attention of Everton manager David Moyes, who according to the players agent, offerred him a lucrative contract which included appearance bonuses.

"I am very pleased to continue to play at such a big club," Piper revealed, "even when I was speaking to Moyes, and no disrespect to him, I felt that a move to Everton would be a step down."

Bernard moved to Southampton in January after failing to agree a new contract at Newcastle United.

Donacaster have broken their tansfer record to seal the signing of Sunderland midfielder Sean Thornton.

Their previous record was £125,000 which was paid to Bristol City only last month for striker Paul Heffernan.

Doncaster have also signed defender Phil McGuire, 25, from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee.

Sunderland and West Ham are keeping close tabs on Wolves £2m bid for Derby Duo Inigi Idiakez and Gregorz Rasiak.

Should Derby accept the bid from Wolves, it is reported that Premiership new-boys Sunderland and Derby will step in with a £1.5m bid for Rasiak who has enjoyed a prolific spell since joining the club.

Ricardo Fuller's move from Portsmouth to Sunderland has been scuppered after the player failed his medical.
Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie told the Northern Echo: "Ricardo failed his medical. Everyone knows he has got a knee problem and Sunderland knew that in advance.

"We had structured a pay-as-you-play deal that was the same kind of deal as he had here.

"His knee might need an operation at some stage, but it could be next week or it could be in the next five years. Everyone knew that was the case.

"It is surprising that this has happened after Sunderland knew the facts anyway. It is frustrating, especially for Ricardo.

"I am sure someone will take him because he has proved with us that his knee is okay, because he appeared in more games for us last season than almost anyone."
