Sunderland winger Matt Piper has signed a new contract to keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2008. As part of the deal, the player, whose mother originates from the town, has shown generosity and loyalty rarely shown by a top level footballer by offerring to play the next season for free, to repay Sunderland and manager Mick McCarthy for the loyalty shown to him during his injury rehabilitation.

Despite his injuries, Piper has demonstrated top form when available, an attracted the attention of Everton manager David Moyes, who according to the players agent, offerred him a lucrative contract which included appearance bonuses.

"I am very pleased to continue to play at such a big club," Piper revealed, "even when I was speaking to Moyes, and no disrespect to him, I felt that a move to Everton would be a step down."

Director of football John Rudge confirmed: "Obviously the manager (Johan Boskamp) has got to assess the players so we've turned down the offers from Burnley and Sunderland.

"He's an Irish international and the offers made are substantially less than the player is worth."

Bridges was told by Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy that his contract at the Stadium of Light would not be extended and has since left the Wearside club.

Bernard moved to Southampton in January after failing to agree a new contract at Newcastle United.

With Southampton's relegation from the Premiership last season Bernard has left the club after his short term deal and is after a move back to the top division.

Bernard has failed to gain a move back to St James Park after backing down from his original £40,000 a week wage demands that ended his stay in the North East and a move to Birmingham is now in the pipeline.

Premiership new-boys Sunderland are also keeping an eye on the situation.

Their previous record was £125,000 which was paid to Bristol City only last month for striker Paul Heffernan.

Doncaster have also signed defender Phil McGuire, 25, from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee.

Rovers chairman John Ryan said: "This shows our determination to go for it this season by making this the best squad that Rovers have ever had.

"Sean and Phil are the type of quality players we are looking to bring in and they won't be the last."

Should Derby accept the bid from Wolves, it is reported that Premiership new-boys Sunderland and Derby will step in with a £1.5m bid for Rasiak who has enjoyed a prolific spell since joining the club.

Polish star Rasiak is known to have aspirations to ply his trade in the Premierhip and would jump at the chance to join either Sunderland or West Ham, though new Derby boss Phil Brown is desperate to hang onto the player.

"We had structured a pay-as-you-play deal that was the same kind of deal as he had here.

"His knee might need an operation at some stage, but it could be next week or it could be in the next five years. Everyone knew that was the case.

"It is surprising that this has happened after Sunderland knew the facts anyway. It is frustrating, especially for Ricardo.

"I am sure someone will take him because he has proved with us that his knee is okay, because he appeared in more games for us last season than almost anyone."

The Norway International is out of contract at Italian club Siena after spending 2 years at the club.

QPR chairman Bill Power said.

'It would be great if we can get him,'' said Power.

''He has terrific experience as a Norway international and is someone who has played in The Premiership and in Italy.''

Fulham have beat a host of clubs, including promoted teams West Ham, Sunderland and Wigan for the signing of the Iceland International.

The move could pave the way for Fulham striker Andy Cole to return to Blackburn Rovers, with manager Mark Hughes poised to swoop.
