Owen stated earlier in the week that should he leave Madrid, his first choice would be to return to the Premiership with Liverpool and if that couldn't happen, he would join Newcastle, but only for a 1 year loan deal.

"All I can tell you is we have made a club record offer that has been accepted by Real Madrid.

O'Brien said:

"I know through experience of four years of football at Newcastle how heavy the pressure weighs on the mind of the players at the club. And the longer that continues, the more difficult it becomes."

"I've spoken to his agent and he tells me JJ is quite happy with things at the club.

"But he says JJ feels that it is like living in a goldfish bowl - and that's the biggest problem."

"JJ has not had a problem with me or any of the staff, as far as I am aware."

"Nobody on the playing side or from the chairman down wants JJ to leave."

"Last year, JJ played more games than anyone apart from Shay Given - and I made him captain when Alan Shearer was out, so that shows what I think of him."

Shearer said:

"Six or seven players have left the club this summer and the manager has brought three players in - so that tells its own story.

"I know the chairman and manager are working very hard to put that right."

"Ideally it would have been different but the fact is that we won't be playing Thursday-Sunday, Thursday-Sunday right throughout the season which probably caught up with us at the end of the last campaign when we were in the UEFA Cup."

"We would have preferred that to be the case again this season but now we'll generally just be playing on Saturdays. Hopefully that will enable us to climb up the league table again. "

Carlisle manager Paul Simpson said:

Coco looks set to put pen to paper on an initial 1 year loan deal, the left back will compete with Celestine Babayaro who has hardly figured fir the St James Park club because of injury 

The Mirror newspaper says the striker pulled out of his team's pre-season friendly with Everton, claiming he was injured to the surprise of the coaching staff.

Reports coming from St James park say a fee of £7m may have already been agreed by the clubs.

"He has indicated that he wants to come to Newcastle, but we have to get a deal that suits both parties."

"I know if Lee was to leave Newcastle I think he would like to come back to London but that has not been a secret. We will have to see and the transfer market has a domino effect and there has not been much so far,"

"We have done a bit of business and I am very pleased but if I can do a bit more I will."

"I haven't heard an awful lot about the takeover and, while I don't think it will affect the team-building plans, there is that worry," said Given.

"We had a disappointing season last year when we finished 14th. I thought maybe the manager and chairman would already have a problem attracting new players because we were not in Europe.

"And we haven't attracted those players. The two we have got, Scott Parker and Emre, have fine reputations - but we need more.

"I'm sure we'll get them in. Since the chairman has been at this club he's been wonderful in the sense he has always put his money where his mouth is and has backed the manager.

"I'm sure it will be no different this time and, come the start of the season in a few weeks, we will have a strong squad here.

"Mind you, if the transfer window closes and we don't sign those players we will be struggling as we have a small squad here."

Newcastle continue their Inter Toto cup campaign tonight against Deportivo La Coruna as they try and seal their place in the Uefa Cup next season, which Given says the club should qualify for Europe every season.

"You need a bit of luck but a club like Newcastle needs to be in Europe every year, to generate money every year and to attract new players," he added. 

"I know we're trying to get in through the back door, and we're hoping to do it, but it's going to be tough."

Majority shareholder Sir John Hall yesterday admitted that he had been approached, with a view to someone buying his stake in the club, valued at over £25m.

The Mirror newspaper says one of the groups competing to take control at St James' Park is led by former Toon player Ray Ranson, who has amassed a multi-million pound fortune and has the backing of several wealthy businessmen.

A group of Malaysian businessmen are also reported to be interested.

Souness almost signed the player while in charge of Blackburn Rovers, but the player failed his medical so the transfer could not be completed.

"We've had a conversation with Craig Moore's people. Craig is without a club at this time," Souness told the club's official website.

"The chairman is dealing with it, but I'm not sure exactly how far down the road we are with it at this minute.

"I was in Scotland last week at the wedding of one of the sons of Rangers chairman David Murray.

"Dick Advocaat and Walter Smith, who both had Craig Moore in their teams at Ibrox, were there and when I asked them about him they said the same thing - sign him."

Newcastle manager Graeme Souness said:

You can never say never because you can't see inside the minds of other managers - but everyone knows the ones we want to keep and those players will not be going anywhere."

It is also reported that the player himself has stated that he wishes to stay at the club.

Robson said: "

Yes he was a little irritant, but part of management is man-managing - handling the player and handling the different character.

"I handled Bellamy. He was a difficult, spiky character but had good qualities so I jumped the waves with him."

He added on Nobok.co.uk: "He was worth it to the club because he was one of the quickest players in the Premiership.

"I'm talking about (Michael) Owen's pace and (Thierry) Henry's pace - he had that pace. How many players are there available that you can get like that? Not too many. Blackburn have got a very good player."

Chairman Freddy Shepherd suggested that the problems with Bellamy were started under Robson's spell.

But the former England coach said: "I liked Bellamy on the training ground because he was a great trainer.

"And on Saturday afternoons from 3pm until 5pm I liked him very much because he won you matches.

"He was a great player so I recognised that. If he's not worth it on the Saturday afternoon then that player has to go.

"But I felt he was worth it and the players liked him in the side as well.

"Not only did I like him but the players liked him, the fans liked him - 52,000 supporters every Saturday liked him - so I handled Bellamy.

"I tried to understand him and tried to get him to understand me and what I needed from him.

"Overall Craig and I had a pretty good relationship."

Ambrose said:

"I think he will be interested, said Ambrose. "I don't know what's going on behind the scenes but if he comes he will be a good signing.

"He is a good lad, he has got good team spirit, good banter in the changing room and he will be a good character to come here. It will be good."

The clubs new coach Giovanni Trapattoni has already signed former Newcastle striker Jon Dahl Tomasson from Milan this week.

Newcastle are keen to get rid of the player on a permanent deal for around £2.5m, where as Stuttgart would like to make it a 1 year loan deal.

Former Arsenal, Real Madrid, PSG and Man City striker is set for a return to the Premiership, only 7 months after leaving England for Turkey.

Newcastle manager Greame Souness said: "We tried to sign him around Christmas time when he left City and I understand he is desperate to come here.

"I've done a lot of checks and everyone tells me he has got his head right."

Newcastle boss Greame Souness said: "Sol has been outstanding for Arsenal and the rock they have built their defence on.

"The downside for us would be the money he earns - but he is a top defender."

Souness added: "When Arsenal go to find a replacement for Vieira it will be an expensive player to buy.

"If we were to sell Jermaine, it would have to be for a lot more money than Vieira cost.

"Jermaine has the potential to be one of the world's best midfielders. He maybe doesn't have Patrick's aggression but he certainly has the athleticism and technically he is good.

"It would take a lot more than £12m to sign him."

Shepherd said -

"Once Alan has the record I believe he'd just quit if it was not going for him. He's a proud man, he'd never cheat the fans."

"Everyone wants a striker who can score goals and we are no exception - but I believe we will get one. As for a central defender, we could buy but we also hope Steven Taylor will come through this season.

"We have taken our time buying players because I have learned the hard way if you act in a hurry you repent at leisure."

Reports this week have linked Upson with a £5m move to Liverpool, but Newcastle could step in with an offer of £3m plus midfielder Nicky Butt, who Birmingham have a reported interest in.

Newcastle are desperate to bolster their defensive options after Titus Bramble was ruled out for up to 8 weeks with a broken elbow.

Bramble could be on the sidelines for up to 8 weeks after the training ground tackle involving striker Michael Chopra.

Newcastle manager,Graeme Souness said: "Losing Titus is a major kick in the teeth, both for us and the player.

"He has emerged as a main man for us over the past four months and I really feel for him."

Bramble added: "It's really bad luck. I went in for a challenge and fell on to my arm.

"I knew straight away there was a problem. It was extremely painful and took me a while to calm down.

"The doctor hasn't told me how long I will be out for but I am looking at a couple of months.

"It is really frustrating, I was feeling sharp and looking forward to getting back into action."

Bernard moved to Southampton in January after failing to agree a new contract at Newcastle United.

With Southampton's relegation from the Premiership last season Bernard has left the club after his short term deal and is after a move back to the top division.

Bernard has failed to gain a move back to St James Park after backing down from his original £40,000 a week wage demands that ended his stay in the North East and a move to Birmingham is now in the pipeline.

Premiership new-boys Sunderland are also keeping an eye on the situation.

Reports in Spain claim that the Magpies have already registered an enquiry with Forlan's current club Villarreal.

A fee of around £6m is the figure Newcastle will have to stump up for the Golden Boot winner.

The 26 year old had found his first team chances at St James Park limited and mostly played in the reserves, McClen now see's Carlisle as an opportunity to gain some much needed first team football.

United manager Paul Simpson said: "He has just been released by Newcastle and he is interested in coming to the club, so we'll have a look at him in some of our games this week.

"He's a quality player so we'll see how he compares to the others we have," he told the club's official website.

"If you look back over the last seven or eight seasons and take Alan Shearer's goals out of Newcastle, Newcastle would have been a mid-table team at best.

"His goals have pushed them up the table, so it is a monumental task to try to find Alan's replacement.

"We have some names. We are trying to get people in with a proven track record and it is a big, big job to fill Alan Shearer's shoes, whoever comes in. But we have got some big names in mind."

Emre told Newcastle's official website: "I am so happy because Newcastle is a very big team and for me, the manager is a very important person."

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness said: "We've worked hard to get him here. Hopefully we can tie everything up and get him signed as he'll be a real addition to the squad.

"We're just going over the final details. There are a few things still to be decided but I'm confident we can do that.

"He will bring a bit of grit and determination and he's a real flair player as well. He works very hard, he's been in Italy for a number of years and has obviously learned a great deal of his trade out there.

"He will do well and he's keen to play English football. He sees it as a type of football that will suit him.

"We've still to tie up a few loose ends, but when he's signed I'll be a very delighted man."

The young goalkeeper is being touted as one of the brightest young goalkeepers in Holland.

ADO Den Haag failed to sign Krul as professional after his youth contract run out and Newcastle jumped at the chance to sign him. Because his youngster contract run out Newcastle only need to pay a schooling compensation. A fee of around €200.000.

It's being expected that Tim Krul will join the Newcastle reserves next week.

It is reported that Boa Morte has a £5m realease clause in his newly signed Fulham contract, which Newcastle are reportedly ready to match.

From St James' Park there is confidence that Boa Morte will come and Souness will then target another central defender and a new striker.

Inter Milan's Emre join the Geordies then, Ambrose's £1.5m move to the Addicks could go through.

"I can't say I'm surprised because you reach the stage where nothing surprises you in football any more.

"But it's really all down to Celtic now. Everything's been made easy for them and there is nothing more I can do to help.

"They've got permission to speak to Craig but I don't know what has happened since then. Your guess is as good as mine."

"He is a player I do admire and I think it has got all blown out of proportion, as things do.

"I have still got an interest in the player, but whether he is still available or not, I am not sure.

"It has been two or three weeks since we have spoken to him and we will see how things develop."

Bellamy was expected to report back to training with the Magpies this morning but was given an extra week off by the club. It now looks like this was to give the Welsh outcast extra time to have talks with Everton boss David Moyes which were reported to of taken place last night.

The remaing problem in the deal will be if Everton will match Bellamy's £45,000 a week wage demands or if the player will lower these to clinch the deal at the Chamions League qualifiers.

"We did inquire about Christian Vieri," he told Newcastle's official website. "I got a mutual friend to have a word with the player but it appears he wants to go to Spain.

"We made an inquiry for Alan Smith also but were told there is nothing doing."

The 31 year old has this week been linked with moves to former club Juventus and Premiership sides Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

"Inter and Christian Vieri have mutually decided to rescind the contract that was due to expire on June 30, 2006 early," read a club statement.

"Negotiations between the player and the club progressed smoothly, and the documents related to the issue were registered at the Lega Calcio (Football League) offices this morning (Friday).

"FC Internazionale thank Christian Vieri for having contributed for six seasons to the history of the club.

"Christian Vieri thanks Inter and its fans for the professional respect and affection which characterised the relationship."

Smith spent alot of time on the bench last season at Manchester United and could be tempted by first team football at St James Park.

The Sun says Newcastle are ready to make a £7 million offer for the England international - but have told United that Jermaine Jenas will not be part of any deal.

A Toon spokesman said: "Jermaine's here for the long term, he is not for sale."

Souness said:

"Kieron Dyer has another year left and I hope between now and Christmas he will sign another contract.

"I'm sure we can make it happen.

"I've been very happy with him - I see him as a proper player and I've enjoyed working with him.

"I want to keep him at the club."

The second fine relates to comments made in a The Sun newspaper regarding United player Jermaine Jenas.

"I have seen Jermaine Jenas growing up at Newcastle and he is a brilliant player who could become the new Patrick Vieira.

"But I know just how badly he took to being put on the bench last season."

Emre admitted that an offer from homeland club Fenerbahce had been made but said that it was too early for him to return home.

Newcastle have not verified this suggestion via the media but it is rumoured that the deal could be around the £4 Million mark.

The Guardian says Everton had hoped to sign Bellamy, who spent the final four months of last season on loan at Celtic after falling out with Graeme Souness at St James' Park, for a cut-price £3m.

But, though manager David Moyes has not given up all hope of signing him, the Everton hierarchy have grown increasingly frustrated at the Wales international's wage demands.

It is belived the Welsh striker is on £45,000 a week at Newcaslte.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness tried for the Portugal International in January and may go for Boa Morte again this summer as he seeks a replacement for new Portsmouth signing Laurent Robert.

Newcastle will probably face competition from Liverpool, where manager Benitez is a big fan of Boa Morte's and could turn to the winger should talks with Middlesbrough's Bolo Zenden break down.

Souness enquired about the defender as a partner for Jean-Alain Boumsong back in January but it is understood the defender is more likely to leave now that he is in the final year of his contract. 

Meanwhile Souness has flown out to meet Emre to convince him that a move to St James Park is the right one to make.  Everton have dropped out of the running due to player salary expected to be around £60,000 per week.

It is now unlikely that Figo will join the Magpies.  His representatives are demanding around £90,000 per week with a minimum one year contract.  Freddy Shepherd has already been stung once this year with Kluivert failing to repay the amount invested him during his stay.

Emre's agent, Ahmet Bulut: "He is back from holiday today and you will know by tomorrow which team he will be playing for next season. There are six teams in England who have asked about Emre. Emre is playing next season in England, for sure."

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has today traveled to meet the players agent and the 'Toon Army' are said to be favourates to capture the player.
