Benitez said told the clubs officials website:

"Our chief executive Rick Parry is talking with their Chairman about the possibility of a deal.

Reports this week have linked Upson with a £5m move to Liverpool, but Newcastle could step in with an offer of £3m plus midfielder Nicky Butt, who Birmingham have a reported interest in.

Liverpool reportedly had a £6m bid for the player turned down in earlier in the summer.

"Let's not kid ourselves, he can probably get eight times the money and play in the Champions League so I can understand where he's coming from.

"It's not easy for me to stand and say `you're not going', but I've got a job to do and if he goes where do we go?

He added: "We have got to try to hang on to him if we can.

"I've spoken to Peter. He knows I understand his situation, which I do.

"At the same time we've got a football club here and Crouch has got a contract at the end of the day."

While Real Madrid manger has said that he will not step in the way of Figo leaving Madrid, should he want to and stated the same for Michael Owen.

"I made the decision on Tuesday night that I could not leave this club. I love Liverpool so much. This is my club and my heart is here.

"The last thing I wanted to do was leave. I just could not do it."

Gerrard was reported to of held talks late last night with Liverpool chief excecutive Rick Parry and stated that he wanted to stay at Anfield.

 "I couldn't be more delighted," said Parry. "He has decided to stay with us because he realises how much the club means to him.
 
"Even when he said he was going I don't think the language he used suggested he really wanted to go. He was talking about the last few days being difficult and not being able to come back, he never actually said he wanted to go.
 
"Over the last 24 hours he has reflected on it, thought it through and he wants to stay.
 
"From our point of view it's what we wanted all along. I have apologised to Stevie if I've mis-read his emotions. I guess after Istanbul I thought I knew where we were going but he clearly thought for whatever reason that the club wasn't as enthusiastic about keeping him as we might have been. He was anxious.
 
"There were one or two issues with the contract which he took to mean a lack of enthusiasm on our part, which it wasn't. He understands that now. We've had some emotional moments together, cleared everything up and I don't think this will happen again.
 
"I don't think he's staying because he was concerned about the negative reaction. I made the point on Monday to him to think of the fans in Istanbul and ask himself how he could leave that. Obviously the last day or two hasn't been easy for him but this isn't a decision for negative reasons.
 
"He's found it complicated but deep down it was always a difficult decision for him to say he wanted to go. We're all absolutely thrilled and I'm more certain than ever that he's fully committed and that this is where he wants to be."

Liverpool and West Ham both had £6m bids turned down for the England international on Monday but it is now reported that Southampton could sell the want-away striker for £8m

Should Liverpool up their bid the deal could be completed this week.

The Dutch giants see Hasselbaink as a replacement for Dirk Kuyt, who has been linked to Liverpool, Newcastle and La Liga side Atletico Madrid in a £10m deal.

The Sun newspaper says Feyenoord are confident a £3 million bid will be enough to for Boro to consider selling the star.

Baptista is believed to have an agreement with Barcelona for the start of the 2006/07 season, which is when he receives his Spanish passport. But it's emerged that his representatives have been busy in talks with English clubs about a summer move to England.

It is rumoured that Figo's £90,000 a week wage demands have scared off potential suiters Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcaslte, but the London side are set to offer Figo a £60,000 a week deal.

The 30-year-old (31 in July) 2million-rated Greek international scored eight goals in 38 games last season. Signed from Olympiakos on a Bosman in 2003, Giannakopoulos has a year left on his existing contract with Bolton. His real name is Stylianos but he prefers to be called Stelios.

The deal is reported to be around £1.5m

A source has told that Raul spoke with the president Perez and said: "I am at the disposal of the club. If you want me to make a sacrifice and leave, I am prepared to do so."

Raul knows his form over the last 18 months has not been good enough and is aware of interest from Liverpool.

But Perez told his captain: "You are the supporters' symbol and for us, untouchable. You are not for sale and we will not be listening to offers for you."

The player is contracted to Real until 2010 and the Madrid giants are adamant they will not sell a player who is the best advertisement the club has for it's youth system.

"We are near but it's still to be confirmed."

Magpies boss Graeme Souness tried for the Portugal International in January and may go for Boa Morte again this summer as he seeks a replacement for new Portsmouth signing Laurent Robert.

Newcastle will probably face competition from Liverpool, where manager Benitez is a big fan of Boa Morte's and could turn to the winger should talks with Middlesbrough's Bolo Zenden break down.
