Newcastle manager Graeme Souness last night said:
"All I can tell you is we have made a club record offer that has been accepted by Real Madrid.
"It is now up to the player and his advisors as to whether he says yes or no. But I am a confident sort of person and I am hopeful Michael will join us.
"He knows what we are about. He knows some of the players at our club and I am sure he will be speaking to them to find out what we can offer him.
"But as I understand it the loan is not an option. Not a chance, not when we have made a whacking great offer for him that has been accepted. "If Real have accepted our offer and they are happy with that then it is now up to us to make the deal attractive for Michael." |

"Let's not kid ourselves, he can probably get eight times the money and play in the Champions League so I can understand where he's coming from.
"It's not easy for me to stand and say `you're not going', but I've got a job to do and if he goes where do we go?
He added: "We have got to try to hang on to him if we can.
"I've spoken to Peter. He knows I understand his situation, which I do.
"At the same time we've got a football club here and Crouch has got a contract at the end of the day." |
| Luis Figo has pleaded with Real Madrid not to scupper a 'dream move' to the Premiership with Liverpool by demanding a fee for the players services. |

"It's close but it's still up in the air and nothing has been finalised," added Figo.
"It's my dream to play for Liverpool but dreams don't always come true, I am still waiting."
While Real Madrid manger has said that he will not step in the way of Figo leaving Madrid, should he want to and stated the same for Michael Owen.
"We are always talking about Michael Owen leaving," said Luxemburgo. "Look, Michael has a contract here - like Luis Figo. Whether they will play or not is a different story. But they are Real Madrid players.
"You can't have the attitude that you will only stay if you are playing. Those who want to be here just to play are better off going".
"If you are here then you have to put yourself at the disposal of the squad. If you don't want that, it is better you tell the club and they decide.
"I'm the one who picks the team and if I think someone should not play, then they won't play." |
| Steven Gerrard has blamed himself for the confusion of his extended stay at Liverpool |
| But he revealed last night: "I love this place too much to leave. I don't want to get into attaching blame to anyone for all this.
"If I blame anyone, it is myself. I have been really confused.
"I shall be signing the deal here - and this won't be happening again next summer or ever again.
"I have committed my long-term future to the club and I want all the speculation to end now. This is what I have wanted all along."
He added: "There was confusion and doubt in my mind but now I know how much the club wants me.
"The last five or six weeks were the hardest of my life because I wrongly believed the club did not want me.
"I wanted my future sorted out as soon as possible after the Champions League final. When that wasn't the case, the longer it went on, the more misunderstandings there were.
"I admit I have made mistakes and the club acknowledges they have made some mistakes as well. I have now apologised to Liverpool and they have apologised to me, which is important.
"I needed some time on my own to think. I realised I was not prepared to let go all I'd worked so hard for.
"I've been here since the age of eight, become captain, and had so many great years. "I just feel the club deserve the next five to 10 years of my career. I don't want to give them to another club. I was left feeling so confused. I was receiving all kinds of advice and information from so many people.
"I just had to sit down with my girlfriend and advisor and think it all through again for myself.
"I made the decision on Tuesday night that I could not leave this club. I love Liverpool so much. This is my club and my heart is here.
"The last thing I wanted to do was leave. I just could not do it." |
| Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has made an amazing u-turn by deciding to stick with the European Champions. |
Gerrard was reported to of held talks late last night with Liverpool chief excecutive Rick Parry and stated that he wanted to stay at Anfield.
"I couldn't be more delighted," said Parry. "He has decided to stay with us because he realises how much the club means to him. "Even when he said he was going I don't think the language he used suggested he really wanted to go. He was talking about the last few days being difficult and not being able to come back, he never actually said he wanted to go. "Over the last 24 hours he has reflected on it, thought it through and he wants to stay. "From our point of view it's what we wanted all along. I have apologised to Stevie if I've mis-read his emotions. I guess after Istanbul I thought I knew where we were going but he clearly thought for whatever reason that the club wasn't as enthusiastic about keeping him as we might have been. He was anxious. "There were one or two issues with the contract which he took to mean a lack of enthusiasm on our part, which it wasn't. He understands that now. We've had some emotional moments together, cleared everything up and I don't think this will happen again. "I don't think he's staying because he was concerned about the negative reaction. I made the point on Monday to him to think of the fans in Istanbul and ask himself how he could leave that. Obviously the last day or two hasn't been easy for him but this isn't a decision for negative reasons. "He's found it complicated but deep down it was always a difficult decision for him to say he wanted to go. We're all absolutely thrilled and I'm more certain than ever that he's fully committed and that this is where he wants to be." |

Liverpool legend Ian Rush might be at the age of 43 but as he showed in the Tsunami charity match at Anfield last season he has lost none of his eye for goal and looked really sharp. TNS managing director Mike Harris is a close friend of Rush and he is hoping to lure him out of retirement for this match. Harris said: "Ian's a big friend of mine. He opened our 500-seater stand four years ago and helped coach our strikers before we played Manchester City in the UEFA Cup two years ago. "I'm sure we'll be talking soon and when we do I'll ask him to put his boots back on. The sight of Ian Rush on the bench against his former club would give the side a massive lift." Meanwhile, speaking before the invitation from Harris to put on his boots once again, Rush welcomed the draw and said it will be a great occasion. Rush said: "I've helped TNS out by training their strikers and I was a non-executive director at the club for a spell. "It's a great draw for a club of their size and I wish them well.
