It is reported that Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires could be set the leave the London club with La Liga team Valencia ready to swoop. |
The Gunners have refused to budge after offering the 32-year-old midfielder only a 12-month extension on his contract at Highbury, which has only one season left to run, despite the French ace bagging 17 goals last term.
Pires, who wanted two years, broke off negotiations and told his advisors that he was willing to consider a move to end his Arsenal career after five seasons.
Agent Stephane Courbis has indicated to Valencia that Arsene Wenger is ready to let Pires go for around £2m as the Gunners boss begins the overhaul of his squad to take on champions Chelsea. The only stumbling block is the player's £50,000-a-week wages |
Chelsea have completed the signing of Athletic Bilbao left-back Asier del Horno for around £8 million. |
The Spanish left back has been earmarked by Blues boss Jose Mourinho for some time, but the deal has been something of a stop-starter.
The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal, starting from July 1, after the two clubs finally came to a suitable arrangement.
Bilbao president Fernando Lamikitz has been insisting that they will not let Del Horno go on the cheap, and the €12 million deal has persuaded them to do business.
"Asier is an outstanding international player who will add quality to the squad in a position we needed to strengthen," Mourinho told the club website.
"I'm sure he will be a key player as Chelsea continues with its goal to achieve greater success both in England and in the Champions League."
The Portuguese coach had identified left back as an area that needed strengthening after having to play William Gallas in a makeshift role last season. |
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly given Chelsea at 12 noon deadline on
Friday to come up with a acceptable compensation package for the Spurs
Sporting Director.
|
Arnesen was pictured off the coast of Sardinia with billionaire
Blues owner Abramovich, Spurs have forced talks to a head by
threatening to lodge an official complaint with the Premier League
should an agreement not be forthcoming.
"Having seen the photo, we have contacted Chelsea and set a deadline for the matter to be resolved," read a club statement.
"If
we do not receive a satisfactory agreement by noon on Friday, we shall
be making a formal complaint to the FAPL and looking to exercise other
potential options."
|
| AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has
confirmed that the Milan club have rejected an approach from
Premiership champions Chelsea for star striker Andriy Shevchenk |
"Chelsea made a request for Shevchenko, but the answer was no. Andriy
Shevchenko is not for sale," Galliani told reporters on Wednesday.
The statement indicates that for the second summer in a row, Chelsea have had an approach for the player rebuffed.
Meanwhile, after snapping up Asier del Horno for £8million from
Athletic Bilbao, a move for Georgia international Kaladze now seems far
from certain.
"For the time being, Kaladze remains at Milan," said Galliani.
"We have not reached a financial agreement with Chelsea even though our relationship with the English club is still excellent.
"It's a commercial agreement and it's normal that each club looks at their own interests."
Although the possible transfers of Shevchenko and Kaladze seem unlikely
to happen for the time being, Galliani is confident that the two clubs
are close to agreeing a deal for striker Hernan Crespo, who spent last
season on loan at the San Siro from Stamford Bridge.
The Argentinian has already declared that he is willing to accept a
pay-cut to secure his move to the Italian giants for at least another
season.
"The Crespo and Kaladze situations are separate," Galliani added.
"Regarding Crespo, between today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday) we will know where the Argentinian striker will play.
"I want to thank Crespo for the great economic sacrifice that he has made in order to have the possibility of staying in Milan." |
Benni McCarthy has indicated he would be interested in joining Blackburn Rovers.
|
The Porto striker is one of Mark Hughes's top targets this
summer but the Welshman has had trouble agreeing a fee with the 2004
UEFA Champions League winners. After admitting he is unlikely to
join Chelsea, despite plenty of speculation that Jose Mourinho would
like to work with him again at Stamford Bridge, the South Africa
international is keen to head for Ewood Park. "It is enough in reading the declarations of the Blackburn manager," he told A Bola. "I
have the certainty to know I would not lack support from him, that I
would be his first choice and I would not run the risk of spending the
season watching my team-mates play, as eventually would be the case if
I went to a club of the type of Manchester United or Chelsea. "No, I am not [lacking esteem]. I am being as realistic as possible. "I am not the big star that Chelsea and Manchester buy for millions of euros. "I
am a good player who, at Blackburn Rovers, could easily acquire the
necessary experience in a championship as fascinating as the English
one, to later make a leap to a club of a bigger dimension. Yes, such as
Manchester and Chelsea." McCarthy is hopeful Porto can thrash out a deal with Blackburn to send him to The Premiership. "Despite the difficulties that exist in the negotiations, I still do not stop believing in being transferred," he added.
