Chelsea have now failed in bids for Adriano (Inter Milan), David Trezeguet (Juventus), Torres (Atletico Madrid),  Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona) and Shevchenko (Milan) this summer and could move for Van Nistelrooy who has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent days.

The Gunners have refused to budge after offering the 32-year-old midfielder only a 12-month extension on his contract at Highbury, which has only one season left to run, despite the French ace bagging 17 goals last term.

Pires, who wanted two years, broke off negotiations and told his advisors that he was willing to consider a move to end his Arsenal career after five seasons.

The Spanish left back has been earmarked by Blues boss Jose Mourinho for some time, but the deal has been something of a stop-starter.

The 24-year-old has signed a three-year deal, starting from July 1, after the two clubs finally came to a suitable arrangement.

Bilbao president Fernando Lamikitz has been insisting that they will not let Del Horno go on the cheap, and the €12 million deal has persuaded them to do business.
