| Blackburn manager Mark Hughes has stated that he does not expect to make anymore permanent signings to his squad before the tranfers window closes next Wednesday, though he would not rule out any loan signings. |
Hughes said:
"The beauty of having done our main business so early was that we avoided the last-minute rush - plus we managed to bed the new guys in during the pre-season build-up.
"I cannot see me making any more purchases but there is definitely the scope to bring in a couple of players on loan.
"But I'm experiencing the same problem as every other manager - it's tough to get people who will actually strengthen the squad rather than just increase the numbers.
"We have been scouring the foreign market as well as the lower leagues here looking for a couple of new faces, but I'm not holding my breath." |
| West Ham United striker Marlon Harewood has signed a new 5 year contract at the club to extend his stay at Upton Park to 2010 |
Harewood said:
"I'm delighted to have signed a new contract with the Club. The atmosphere and spirit within the squad is fantastic at the moment and I'm proud to be a part of the team.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Club so far and winning promotion last season was without doubt one of the best moments of my career. Hopefully, we can look forward to more success like that in the future.
"We got off to a great start with the result against Blackburn on Saturday and it's given us a lot of confidence going into the trip to Newcastle. It's a great starting point for us to build on this season." |
| Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Jansen has revealed that he nearly quit football after missing nearly 2 years of his carrer after a motorcycle accident |
Jansen said:
"I was definitely thinking of packing it all in because I was on the floor," "I was so depressed with it all. I was battling on to no avail and I became so sick with it."
"But working with the psychologist seemed to lift me and made me think in different ways."
"It gave me a different perspective on life, it changed my mindset. I'm not saying I'm cured or anything but I'm in a much better state of mind than I was before."
"I feel that my head is right now, so it's just a case of getting match fit and getting my confidence back."
"The club have been great with me and the fans have been different class too. They keep me going." |

| Porto striker Benni McCarthy feels his current club Porto will ruin the chance for him to make his 'dream' move to the Premiership |
South African International McCarthy said:
"My option is always open and that has always been a dream for me as a youngster and I still think I can have an opportunity to go there, but for the moment I just have to complete my contract because things look difficult," McCarthy, who is being targeted by Blackburn, West Ham and Everton, told Sky Sports News.
"The reason why I didn't move is because Porto didn't let me leave because they needed me and this was not the perfect time for me to go.
"Like I said, in football nowadays the only thing that talks is money, and if clubs give the transfer fees that teams want then you shouldn't have any problem, but if money doesn't come into action then nothing can happen.
"I think at this point, Porto really wanted me to stay and the coach made it clear he wants to play me, so the reason I will leave this year is if a club comes and gives Porto the money they want - that's the only way I can leave.
"But I have to complete (my contract) because I am employed by Porto so I have keep on working daily." |
| Sir Bobby Robson has said he expects Blackburn Rovers to see the best of new signing Craig Bellamy |
Robson said:
"Having known him more than Graeme, Mark will put up with the strange idiosyncrasies that he has. Mark will soldier on and try to get the best out of him.
"He will do well because he's a fine player. He did well at Celtic and they would have liked to have kept him.
"He has had him as Welsh captain when he was manager, he's one of his best players.
"He saw in him a fine player and a player to get results - and will have said to himself, 'I'll handle the difficult issues with him because I'll get the other side of him.
"He was Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It's man-management, you either want to man-manage him or you don't, Sir Bobby added.
"I saw in Craig a player important to the club and one the fans liked. Monday to Friday he may give you a few headaches but not every day.
"But on Saturday and in training he's very good. Players like (Alan) Shearer, if they're honest, will tell you that.
"He wins matches - he wants the ball behind people and has the pace to get there." |
| Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness has confirmed that the club are in talks with Australian defender Craig Moore. |
Souness almost signed the player while in charge of Blackburn Rovers, but the player failed his medical so the transfer could not be completed.
"We've had a conversation with Craig Moore's people. Craig is without a club at this time," Souness told the club's official website.
"The chairman is dealing with it, but I'm not sure exactly how far down the road we are with it at this minute.
"I was in Scotland last week at the wedding of one of the sons of Rangers chairman David Murray.
"Dick Advocaat and Walter Smith, who both had Craig Moore in their teams at Ibrox, were there and when I asked them about him they said the same thing - sign him." |
| Sir Bobby Robson has spoken of his handling of former Newcastle United striker Craig Bellamy, now at Blackburn Rovers. |
Robson said: "
Yes he was a little irritant, but part of management is man-managing - handling the player and handling the different character.
"I handled Bellamy. He was a difficult, spiky character but had good qualities so I jumped the waves with him."
He added on Nobok.co.uk: "He was worth it to the club because he was one of the quickest players in the Premiership.
"I'm talking about (Michael) Owen's pace and (Thierry) Henry's pace - he had that pace. How many players are there available that you can get like that? Not too many. Blackburn have got a very good player."
Chairman Freddy Shepherd suggested that the problems with Bellamy were started under Robson's spell.
But the former England coach said: "I liked Bellamy on the training ground because he was a great trainer.
"And on Saturday afternoons from 3pm until 5pm I liked him very much because he won you matches.
"He was a great player so I recognised that. If he's not worth it on the Saturday afternoon then that player has to go.
"But I felt he was worth it and the players liked him in the side as well.
"Not only did I like him but the players liked him, the fans liked him - 52,000 supporters every Saturday liked him - so I handled Bellamy.
"I tried to understand him and tried to get him to understand me and what I needed from him.
"Overall Craig and I had a pretty good relationship." |
| Mark Hughes has said he is happy with the progress that striker Matt Jansen has made on his return to pre-season training with the club. |
Hughes told www.rovers.co.uk:
"He's missed a lot of football, a lot of training, but he has obviously kept himself fit in his time away from the club.
"He hasn't struggled fitness wise, training with the group is different from training on your own, so a little bit of his game is not quite there yet, but I'm pleased for him." |

| Fulham manager has told Blackburn to make a bid for Andy Cole or let him get on with his Fulham career. |
Coleman said -
"I've been very disappointed in Blackburn. Their chief executive John Williams said on Sky he was interested in signing Andy Cole, which I thought was way off the mark.
"All he's done is unsettle one of our players, our top scorer from last season.
"I wouldn't let one of our directors say that on TV because it's unsettling and we have not had any contact from Blackburn.
"I just wish they'd shut up and let him get on with his career and playing for Fulham. If they want to put a bid in then we can't stop them but they shouldn't talk about it like that." |

| Blackburn Rovers midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen has welcomed comparisons with Real Madrid and England Captain David Beckham. |
| "The hair, the colouring - maybe it reminds people," smiled Pedersen when asked about it at the end of last season. "It's become part of me and I feel comfortable about it.
"I'm happy people are interested in me. I like the media and I'd like to work in it one day, maybe on TV. The Beckham thing is just fun. It doesn't mean anything, although if I could have the same career as Beckham, of course I would be happy.
"They do these statistics that show how much Norwegian newspapers write about someone, and I was third last year. I beat the king!" |
| Manchester United youngster Jonathan Spector on loan for the 2005/2006 season. |
Spector had agreed a similar loan deal at Blackburn Rovers in January but the deal was cancelled by Man Utd boss Alex Ferguson as he needed cover for his squad.
Charlton manager Alan Curbishley told his club's official website: "He's a defender who can play anywhere across the back four. He made his debut for Man Utd at left-back, and like a lot of defenders sees himself as centre back. He can play right back as well.
"That's what I like about him, his versatility.
"He's very quick, is two-footed and can pass the ball very well. He gets tight to forwards and is a very good athlete."
He continued: "He's a bit like Kieran Richardson in the sense he has limited opportunities; he's had a few games but was finding it hard to break in.
"I think we beat off some competition in the end - there's a few clubs that would have liked him. He's come in here desperate to get in the first team to show everybody what he can do."
He also added: "I asked after him again at the end of the season and Alex agreed to let us have him.
"Jonathan sees this as an opportunity to perhaps try and get some first team games but he knows he's got to get in the team first. After his first days' training we're all very happy with him." |

| Laurent Robert believes his former Newcastle boss Graeme Souness should be sacked for his poor performace at St. James Park |
"Souness put kids in the team and left me on the bench to annoy me," Robert told The Sun. "He's just a child.
"We would have won the Uefa Cup last season if Souness had possessed the intelligence.
"He made a personal matter out of our disagreement and, by punishing me, he punished the whole team.
"If he keeps going like he has been he'll quite simply get fired. And he'll deserve it."
Robert feels Newcastle could be heading for a slippery slope, as he added: "Souness took Blackburn into the relegation zone and looks like doing the same thing at Newcastle.
"We finished the season so badly that towards the end I just laughed at him.
"I can see a lot more pain for the players, the fans and the chairman while he remains as manager.
"My leaving should be a wake-up call for the good of the Newcastle team."
Souness was brought in to replace Sir Bobby Robson and Robert admits he was hurt by the club's decision to axe the veteran tactician.
"What Newcastle did to Sir Bobby was bizarre," added the former PSG man. "They just threw him out, when I knew he would have got things going again.
"That hurt me a lot." |

| After the outblasts and alleged text messages to Alan Shearer claiming he was past it, it looked like the quick paced Striker was finished at the toon for good. Benni McCarthy has indicated he would be interested in joining Blackburn Rovers.
|
The Porto striker is one of Mark Hughes's top targets this
summer but the Welshman has had trouble agreeing a fee with the 2004
UEFA Champions League winners. After admitting he is unlikely to
join Chelsea, despite plenty of speculation that Jose Mourinho would
like to work with him again at Stamford Bridge, the South Africa
international is keen to head for Ewood Park. "It is enough in reading the declarations of the Blackburn manager," he told A Bola. "I
have the certainty to know I would not lack support from him, that I
would be his first choice and I would not run the risk of spending the
season watching my team-mates play, as eventually would be the case if
I went to a club of the type of Manchester United or Chelsea. "No, I am not [lacking esteem]. I am being as realistic as possible. "I am not the big star that Chelsea and Manchester buy for millions of euros. "I
am a good player who, at Blackburn Rovers, could easily acquire the
necessary experience in a championship as fascinating as the English
one, to later make a leap to a club of a bigger dimension. Yes, such as
Manchester and Chelsea." McCarthy is hopeful Porto can thrash out a deal with Blackburn to send him to The Premiership. "Despite the difficulties that exist in the negotiations, I still do not stop believing in being transferred," he added.
