Rovers and Athletic have been linked with Valencia and the player's representitive George Urquhart confirmed an English club were keen on the player's signature.

"The beauty of having done our main business so early was that we avoided the last-minute rush - plus we managed to bed the new guys in during the pre-season build-up.

South African International McCarthy said:

"My option is always open and that has always been a dream for me as a youngster and I still think I can have an opportunity to go there, but for the moment I just have to complete my contract because things look difficult," McCarthy, who is being targeted by Blackburn, West Ham and Everton, told Sky Sports News.

"The reason why I didn't move is because Porto didn't let me leave because they needed me and this was not the perfect time for me to go.

But the former England coach said: "I liked Bellamy on the training ground because he was a great trainer.

"And on Saturday afternoons from 3pm until 5pm I liked him very much because he won you matches.

"He was a great player so I recognised that. If he's not worth it on the Saturday afternoon then that player has to go.

"But I felt he was worth it and the players liked him in the side as well.

"Not only did I like him but the players liked him, the fans liked him - 52,000 supporters every Saturday liked him - so I handled Bellamy.

"I tried to understand him and tried to get him to understand me and what I needed from him.

"Overall Craig and I had a pretty good relationship."

Hughes told www.rovers.co.uk:

"He's missed a lot of football, a lot of training, but he has obviously kept himself fit in his time away from the club.

The former Blackburn Rovers midfielder, who had an unsuccessful time at Ewood Park has once again had rave reviews after returning to Scotland with Livingston.

The People newspaper says Upton Park boss Alan Pardew has made an approach for the Argentina international, who has been told he can leave by Inter coach Roberto Mancini.

The player was last year linked with loan moves to the Premiership with Blackburn and Charlton.

Their previous record was £125,000 which was paid to Bristol City only last month for striker Paul Heffernan.

Doncaster have also signed defender Phil McGuire, 25, from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee.

Spector had agreed a similar loan deal at Blackburn Rovers in January but the deal was cancelled by Man Utd boss Alex Ferguson as he needed cover for his squad.

Charlton manager Alan Curbishley told his club's official website: "He's a defender who can play anywhere across the back four. He made his debut for Man Utd at left-back, and like a lot of defenders sees himself as centre back. He can play right back as well.

"That's what I like about him, his versatility.

"He's very quick, is two-footed and can pass the ball very well. He gets tight to forwards and is a very good athlete."

He continued: "He's a bit like Kieran Richardson in the sense he has limited opportunities; he's had a few games but was finding it hard to break in.

"I think we beat off some competition in the end - there's a few clubs that would have liked him. He's come in here desperate to get in the first team to show everybody what he can do."

He also added: "I asked after him again at the end of the season and Alex agreed to let us have him.

"Jonathan sees this as an opportunity to perhaps try and get some first team games but he knows he's got to get in the team first. After his first days' training we're all very happy with him."

After the £4m signing of Craig Bellamy from Newcastle last week, the Blackburn Chairman has warnered Hughes that any new signings must be funded by sellings members of the current squad.

Williams told The People: "It's time to look at trading. We've got quite a big squad now. There may well be some comings and goings."

16 year old Somodi is currently with club side Ferencvaros, and the cash strapped club are set to give the go ahead for the deal to go through over the summer.

Should the deal be completed the player will join the clubs highly rated youth academy with a long term vision of replacing Brad Freidel between the Ewood sticks. 

Bellamy's decision to join his former Wales manager, Mark Hughes, at Ewood Park comes as another blow to Birmingham, who have a tense relationship with Blackburn, regarding the transfer of former Birmingham star Robbie Savage.

Blackburn are set to bid £500,000 for the player who only let Ewood Park, this time last year.

Fulham are said to be ready to sell the player and should the bid be accepted, the deal will be completed quickly.

A bid af around £6m will trigger the players release clause which has been holding up McCarthy's proposed move to Blackburn, after they only bid £4.5m

McCarthy has never hidden his desire to play in the Premiership, and should West Ham's bid go through the deal could be completed as early as Friday.

Bellamy, who held talks with Everton manager David Moyes over the weekend, will now decide if he will speak to Rovers or Villa about a proposed move or join Champions League qualifiers.

McCarthy is hopeful Porto can thrash out a deal with Blackburn to send him to The Premiership.
